Qualifications and requirements

The JAFS values the expertise and dedication of its reviewers, who play a critical role in maintaining the journal’s academic excellence. To ensure high-quality peer reviews, we seek individuals who meet the following qualifications and requirements:

  • Advanced degrees (MSc, MPhil) with significant professional or research experience may also be considered. Having a PhD is a plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas related to the scope of the journal, including but not limited to sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity conservation.
  • A strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals relevant to agriculture, forestry, or environmental sciences.
  • Prior experience as a peer reviewer for academic journals is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with the peer-review process, including the ability to critically evaluate manuscripts for originality, methodology, and scientific rigor.
  • Active involvement in academia, research institutions, or industry-related organizations within the field.
  • Membership in professional societies related to agriculture, forestry, or environmental sciences is an added advantage.
  • Ability to complete manuscript reviews within the agreed-upon timeframe, typically 2-3 weeks, to ensure timely editorial decisions.
  • Commitment to providing objective, constructive, and unbiased feedback to authors, focusing on the scientific merit of the manuscript.
  • Adherence to ethical guidelines in peer review, including maintaining confidentiality, declaring conflicts of interest, and avoiding plagiarism.
  • Proficiency in written English to effectively articulate feedback and recommendations.
  • Ability to assess various aspects of a manuscript, including its relevance, originality, methodology, data interpretation, and adherence to journal guidelines.
  • Familiarity with online manuscript submission and review systems.
  • Ability to use digital tools and software to review and annotate documents, if needed.

Roles and responsibilities

Reviewers for the JAFS play a pivotal role in maintaining the journal’s high academic standards and scientific integrity. Below are the key roles and responsibilities expected of reviewers,

  • Ensure that only high-quality, original, and scientifically rigorous research is published.
  • Uphold the integrity and reputation of the journal by identifying any ethical concerns, such as plagiarism or data manipulation.
  • Work collaboratively with the editorial team to refine and enhance the quality of manuscripts.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding the manuscript’s content and the peer-review process.
  • Declare any conflicts of interest that may compromise the impartiality of the review.

The number of manuscripts you are assigned may vary, but we aim to balance the workload fairly among our reviewers. Reviewers who consistently meet deadlines and contribute high-quality reviews may receive further opportunities for involvement in the journal’s editorial activities.
